WKKX EDITORIAL NO. 104

(George Kellas)

In 2004, George Kellas approached me about the need to have a radio station in our community which would discuss local issues and allow our neighbors the opportunity to voice their opinions. Most radio stations had gone to syndicated programming which broadcast national voices who had never even been to the Ohio Valley. George was passionate about this idea because he knew it was essential to a strong community and would always give the little guy a voice.

George’s vision became a reality here at AM 1600 WKKX when he helped take a former ESPN station to an all-day local talk format.

George Kellas had a gift to make everyone feel special about themselves. He treated everyone equally no matter who you were. He caused us to think and question certain parts of our community, our government, and ourselves to make each of them better. George never put on airs and never did things for the money. He did things because he believed in them and because he knew they were right.

George taught me a lot about the radio business, but, more importantly, he showed all of us how to be considerate, caring, and respectful to others. He was a friend to so many people and he honestly cared about each of them. He was a devoted family man who did not have a jealous bone in his body. One of George’s greatest qualities was that he knew who he was and he was happy with that -- he didn’t need fancy cars or dining with the rich and famous. He was honest to a fault and you never questioned where you stood with George.

George Kellas’s vision and dream of a Valley Watchdawg radio station will continue for years to come thanks to his dedication, devotion, and hard work.

I want to thank George for allowing me to be a part of this vision and dream. I’m going to miss you, my friend.
